Tannen 2

I qualify Tannen’s assertion in the concluding paragraph because I believe that women can be unmarked. When a female is wearing revealing clothes, it seems like she is “inviting interpretations” of herself. Women would not dress provocatively unless they wanted men to mark them as “sexy.” However, women that dress casually (according to trends) may not be marked uniquely from other women. As Tannen mentioned in her essay, men tend to have similar haircuts and dress and therefore are unmarked. I think in the same way, there are also unmarked women. As human beings, any strange or unusual clothing will get marked. However, clothing that is part of the norm does not garner the same marks.
